The Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences (UPMS) in Saifai, Etawah, is set to establish a 250-bed Level-1 trauma centre near the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, aiming to reduce response time and improve emergency care for accident victims and critical patients. The decision was discussed during a meeting of the University’s Board of Governors chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in his capacity as Chancellor. Officials said the proposed location, around 10 kilometres from the main campus, is expected to help provide faster treatment to those injured in road accidents and other emergencies along the busy expressway.
According to the plan, the trauma centre will be operated by the university and equipped to deliver advanced emergency and critical care services. The move comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in western and central Uttar Pradesh.
In addition to the trauma facility, the university has been directed to establish a ‘Centre for Rural Health’ to address gaps in medical access in surrounding districts. The centre is expected to focus on services such as tele-OPD, virtual consultations, digital data integration and mobile outreach programmes to connect remote communities with specialist care. During the meeting, emphasis was also placed on expanding super-specialty services, upgrading medical education and enhancing research capabilities at the institution. Officials said the university would adopt measures aimed at improving the quality and timeliness of treatment and teaching, while incorporating best practices from other medical institutions.
Another key proposal includes setting up an Integrative Medicine Unit that will coordinate allopathic treatment with AYUSH systems. The unit is expected to run integrative outpatient departments, specialty clinics and wellness and yoga services to offer patients a broader range of care options.
To improve public awareness, the university also plans to launch a Community Broadcast Service. The platform will share information related to disease prevention, health education and government health schemes with local residents. Together, these initiatives are intended to strengthen emergency response, expand access to healthcare in rural areas and support the university’s role as a regional medical and research centre.
