After Punch broke the internet, baby monkey Yuji is going viral with his toy companion, and honestly, we are not emotionally ready again.

The internet barely recovered from Punch, the heartbreak-inducing baby monkey with his orangutan plush, and now, like emotional déjà vu, another tiny primate has entered the chat.

Meet Yuji. Small, wide-eyed, and already carrying the weight of the internet’s feelings on his little shoulders.

Earlier this year, Punch, a baby snow monkey at a zoo near Tokyo, became an accidental global icon after being spotted dragging around a stuffed toy for comfort. It was equal parts adorable and devastating.

Who is Yuji?

Now, thousands of miles away in Mexico, Yuji is living a strikingly similar storyline. Born in early March at a zoo in Guadalajara, he was abandoned by his mother almost immediately. And just like Punch, humans stepped in.

Only this time, the replacement for maternal comfort is not an orangutan plush. It is a humble dog toy.

Videos of Yuji being bottle-fed while tightly clutching his toy have already done what they were always going to do: emotionally destabilise everyone with a WiFi connection.

There is something deeply universal about it. A tiny creature, seeking comfort, holding onto the closest thing that feels like safety. It is soft. It is sad. It is wildly shareable.

And yes, people are already spiralling.

‘Punch’ moment? Baby monkey Yuji goes viral after clinging to plush toy at Mexico zoo

There is actually science behind the softness

While it may look like a carefully curated viral moment, there is real behavioural science at play.

Experts at the zoo explain that baby monkeys instinctively cling to their mothers for security. In the absence of that bond, caregivers introduce soft objects to replicate the feeling of safety. The toy becomes a temporary emotional anchor, helping the animal feel secure enough to eat, move, and grow.

Over time, this attachment is gradually reduced, allowing the monkey to eventually integrate with others of its kind.

Cute, but make it bittersweet

Yuji’s story is undeniably heart-melting, but there is an edge to it. Behind every viral clip is a reminder of loss, adaptation, and survival.

Still, if the internet has decided anything, it is this: we will absolutely cry over a baby monkey and his toy. Again.

And honestly, we would not have it any other way.
