In a controversial case that sparked widespread outrage, American YouTuber Johnny Somali has been sentenced to six months in prison on Tuesday, April 14, with labour in South Korea following a provocative stunt involving a 'comfort women' statue that caused major outrage after he captured himself kissing a statue commemorating wartime sex slaves. The 25-year-old content creator, known for his disruptive livestream antics across Asia, faced legal action over the incident and also drew sharp criticism. Amid all the debates over respect, history and online behaviour, let's find out who is Johnny Somali.
Johnny Somali, who rose to infamy in recent years for filming and livestreaming a string of provocative stunts across South Korea and Japan on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. South Korean authorities later charged him in 2024 with public order violations and obstruction of business and also imposed a travel ban.
The controversy intensified in October 2024, when he posted a video of himself behaving inappropriately near a statue honouring Korean women who were forced into sexual slavery during Japan’s occupation in World War II, often referred to as “comfort women".
During his final court appearances, Jonny Somali reportedly drew the judge's ire after calling the proceedings "unfair", arguing that a Korean streamer, Bongbong, who allegedly shared similar deepfake content, had not faced action.
Prosecutors had pushed for a harsher three-year sentence with hard labour, prompting his mother to file a petition seeking leniency. Following the ruling, Somali is expected to be transferred to a specialised labour prison, where his phone will be confiscated and he will be assigned offender status.
