India-based YouTube channel Bandar Apna Dost earns huge amounts — but how is its 'AI slop' making ₹38 crore? Here's what we know

Kapwing’s report analysed nearly 15,000 of the world’s most popular YouTube channels and identified 278 channels that rely entirely on AI slop. Collectively, they account for more than 63 billion views and 221 million subscribers.

Topping the list by a wide margin is Bandar Apna Dost, which has recorded more than 2.07 billion views and gained 2.76 million subscribers. The channel’s short animated videos feature a human-like rhesus monkey and a muscular, superhero-like character placed in exaggerated, often chaotic scenarios. The videos contain no dialogue, plot or moral message.



Technology and digital rights researcher Rohini Lakshane, speaking to The Guardian, said the channel’s appeal likely lies in its exaggerated visuals and hyper-masculine themes. The lack of a storyline makes the content universally accessible and highly shareable.

Kapwing’s findings also highlight YouTube’s recommendation system as a key driver of AI slop’s popularity. The study found that over 20% of videos suggested to new users can be classified as AI-generated slop, indicating that algorithms reward engagement metrics over originality or depth.

Because AI videos are cheap, fast, and easy to scale, they can quickly take over recommendation feeds.



The success of Bandar Apna Dost highlights a major shift in digital content creation. While AI offers new opportunities for rapid growth and monetisation, critics warn that the surge of automated videos could limit opportunities for independent creators and meaningful programming.

Whether viewed as innovation or exploitation, AI slop is no longer a niche phenomenon; it is shaping what millions watch every day, and generating money in the process.
