Despite the family maintaining silence, the engagement quickly became fodder for political and religious commentary online, with users offering sarcastic takes, speculative claims and, in some cases, pushback against the tone of the discussion. One user said sarcastically, “Congratulations to Aviva Baig on her engagement with Priyanka Vadra's son Raihan Vadra. Soon she will be Aviva Vadra to be later transformed suddenly into Aviva Gandhi at correct political time as per 'custom' of this family. Their kids will be Janeudhari Brahmin from Dattatray…”

Another user wrote, focusing on the couple’s religious identities, “Raihan Vadra (Christian) Gets Engaged To Aviva Baig.(Muslim). Will their kids also be Janeu Dhari Brahmins?!” Questioning the timing of the engagement, another user claimed, “Brilliant timing by Gandhi family in announcing the marriage of Raihan Vadra with his long time girlfriend Aviva Baig, just before Kerala Assembly elections where Muslim votes are critical ! There are high chances that the wedding will happen in Malappuram, Kerala !!”

Another user commented mockingly, “Raihan Vadra : Christian Aviva Baig: Muslim background Their engagement is on! But the irony: Their kids will routinely become 'fake Gandhi' Dattatreya Gotra Hindus, sporting the janeu The British-Italian-Khan bootlicker brigade will keep flattering with full…” Pushing back against the commentary, one user wrote, “Very disappointed with the vile politicisation and commentary on Raihan’s engagement. People grow up. They decide to get married. Not everything has to be brought to the gutter of public opinion.”
