The chaos spilled into the parking lot, where the 31-year-old Noemi Guzman was ultimately shot dead by police after allegedly attacking a 3-year-old child.
What began as a frantic distress call inside a Walmart quickly spiraled into a terrifying, life-or-death confrontation - one that unfolded in minutes and ended in a police shooting now going viral.
The chaos spilled into the parking lot, where a woman was ultimately shot dead by police after allegedly attacking a 3-year-old child. As more details of the chilling sequence emerged, social media erupted with outrage, with users flooding platforms to express shock, anger, and strong reactions to how the incident unfolded.
According to the Omaha Police Department, officers were dispatched to a Walmart on South 72nd Street around 9:15 a.m. after a woman called 911 asking for help. The call abruptly went silent, raising immediate concern.
Moments later, another caller reported a disturbing scene - a woman armed with a "large kitchen knife" standing near a child in a shopping cart.
When officers arrived, they encountered the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Noemi Guzman, in the parking lot with the young boy. Authorities said officers repeatedly ordered her to drop the weapon, but she refused to comply and continued making verbal threats.
Police say the situation escalated rapidly when Guzman allegedly used the knife to cut the child. In response, officers opened fire, fatally shooting her at the scene.
The child's guardian, along with another individual, quickly removed the boy from the cart and rushed to help him. Meanwhile, officers attempted "lifesaving measures" on Guzman, but she was pronounced dead.
The injured child was transported to a children's hospital, where authorities confirmed that his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Further details from investigators paint a chilling sequence of events leading up to the parking lot encounter. Police said Guzman had approached the child and guardian inside the store, threatening them with the knife. She allegedly forced the guardian to walk ahead while keeping the child in the cart, eventually leading them outside.
Surveillance footage later revealed that Guzman had allegedly shoplifted the knife from inside the store before initiating the confrontation.
Following the incident, records on the Omaha Police Department's website showed a mugshot of Noemi Guzman from a 2024 arrest. Authorities said she had been involved in a prior case that year in which she allegedly attacked her father, attempted to start a fire, and broke into a church rectory. She was later found not responsible by reason of insanity.
Following the shooting, the officers involved have been placed on paid leave as part of standard procedure while an investigation is underway. Authorities have not yet determined a motive behind the attack. There are also no known connections between Guzman and the child, the child's family, or the caretaker who was with the child at the Walmart.
Police confirmed that parts of the incident were captured on body-worn cameras and surveillance systems, which are expected to play a key role in reviewing the sequence of events.
"The responding officers acted with professionalism and direct action to intervene and save a child's life," Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said in a statement.
"The community can be reassured in knowing that Omaha police officers stand ready to act with courage and decisiveness in the most serious situations to protect the public."
As news of the incident spread, social media users flooded platforms with emotional and often divided reactions. Many expressed anger over the attack on a young child, while a few others debated the outcome of the police response. Among the reactions circulating online, one comment captured the intensity of public sentiment: "She got the easy way out."
The incident has fueled intense online reactions, with many users backing the police response and saying the swift action likely saved the child's life.

Idk what anyone says, the cop was completely justified using deadly force here. If a crazy lady with a knife is trying to kidnap my child then I’d hope the cop does exactly that. If you threaten a child with a weapon you deserve whatever consequences come, including death. W Cop
