Travis Kelce’s future has become a major talking point after a disappointing Chiefs season marked by injuries, playoff elimination and late losses. With his contract timeline approaching and the team facing transition, Kelce has said retirement decisions will come later.
Travis Kelce’s future with the Kansas City Chiefs has come under renewed focus following a season that has fallen well short of expectations. The veteran tight end, who has previously acknowledged thoughts of retirement, now finds himself at the centre of speculation once again as the Chiefs prepare for an uncertain phase.

Kelce had already reflected on his career direction earlier, particularly after last season’s Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. That defeat denied Kansas City a chance at a third straight championship and prompted Kelce to reassess whether he had the motivation to return for the final year of his contract and accept the responsibilities that come with it.

Decision to return after Super Bowl loss

In February, shortly after appearing in his fifth Super Bowl, Kelce confirmed that he would continue playing. At the time, the decision appeared settled, with Kelce committing to another season despite earlier doubts about retirement.

However, the months that followed did not bring the results the Chiefs had hoped for. The team struggled throughout the season and eventually fell out of playoff contention with three games still remaining in the regular season. The disappointing run has placed added attention on Kelce’s long-term plans, especially as the franchise begins to look toward a possible rebuild.

Jason Kelce’s advice as uncertainty grows

As questions around Travis Kelce’s future mounted, his brother Jason Kelce weighed in with measured advice. Speaking during a media session with ESPN, the former Philadelphia Eagles centre suggested that Travis should not rush any decisions.

Jason advised his brother to play out the remaining games and allow time to reflect. He said Kelce should “play these three games, enjoy them, and then let it sink in,” adding that clarity would come with time. The message reflected a calm approach amid growing external pressure and speculation.

Injuries and a heavy loss against the Titans

The first of those final three games took place against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, but it proved to be another difficult chapter in a tough season. The Chiefs entered the game already dealing with the season-ending injury to quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered the previous week.

Matters worsened during the game when backup quarterback Gardner Minshew was also injured, forcing Kansas City to rely on third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun to finish the contest. The Titans capitalised on the situation and recorded a 26-9 win, only their third victory of the season.

Kelce’s impact was limited, as he finished with just one reception for six yards. The loss dropped the Chiefs to a 6-9 record. Even if Kansas City were to win their final two games, the season would still stand as head coach Andy Reid’s worst record in his 13 years with the team.

Christmas loss and possible final home appearance

Attention intensified further following the Chiefs’ Christmas Day defeat to the Denver Broncos. Kansas City lost 20-13 in what turned out to be their final home game of the season. For Kelce, a 13-year veteran and future Hall of Famer, the game may have marked his last appearance in front of the home crowd.

The NFL shared a video of Kelce walking off the field, captioned to note it was his last home game of the season. In the footage, Kelce was seen greeting Broncos players after recording five catches for 36 yards. His composed manner stood out compared to his more subdued reactions after earlier, damaging losses this season.

Cameras also briefly showed Taylor Swift watching from a private box. She appeared to glance toward the field before turning back to those around her, showing no visible reaction to the result. Her calm expression contrasted with the enthusiastic support she has often shown at Kelce’s games.

Kelce addresses retirement and the road ahead

After the game, Kelce addressed questions about retirement directly. He said the decision would be made later and would involve discussions with his family, friends and the Chiefs organisation. He also spoke about the emotional weight of playing on Christmas Day, noting the scale of attention and feeling that comes with such a stage.

With the Chiefs entering a period of transition and Kelce’s contract set to expire in March 2026, speculation around his future has only increased. For now, Kelce has made it clear that no immediate decision has been taken, leaving the coming months as a key period for reflection.
