Uttar Pradesh will release its draft electoral rolls on December 31 after the Special Intensive Revision concludes, with millions of names flagged for verification or removal. The article explains timelines for claims and objections, reasons for deletions, and next steps ahead of the final voter list publication.
Uttar Pradesh is set to publish its draft electoral rolls on December 31, 2025, marking a key procedural step after the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in the state. The updated voter list is part of an exercise aimed at ensuring accurate and current electoral data ahead of upcoming elections.

The SIR process, which involves door‑to‑door enumeration and verification of voter details, concluded in late December after extensions to earlier deadlines. During this phase, officials collected information and categorized voters based on updated eligibility criteria. A significant portion of the previous list was marked under various classifications, including those whose details were incomplete or could not be verified.

According to reports, a large number of names, nearly 2.89 crore in Uttar Pradesh’s electoral database were categorized as “uncollectable,” including voters who may have changed residence, passed away, or appeared in duplicate records from other regions. These names are expected to be omitted from the forthcoming draft list.

Once published, the draft electoral rolls will be open to public scrutiny. Eligible voters whose names are missing or whose details appear incorrect can file claims or objections within the specified window, which typically extends for several weeks after the draft’s release. This period allows citizens to submit documentation or clarifications to ensure their inclusion in the final rolls.

Officials emphasize that the verification period is an important part of the democratic process, intended to balance accuracy with inclusivity. After the claims and objections phase concludes, authorities will review submissions and make necessary adjustments before finalizing the voter list. The final publication of electoral rolls is expected in February 2026.

The revision exercise has drawn attention from various stakeholders, including civil society and political observers, who note the challenge of maintaining comprehensive voter records in the country’s most populous state. Accurate rolls are considered essential for fair participation in future elections, especially given Uttar Pradesh’s significant impact on national political outcomes.

Citizens are advised to check the draft list carefully upon its release and respond promptly if they encounter any discrepancies, ensuring their voting rights are preserved in the updated electoral register.
